Here’s what we’re doing for the Poetry Unit:

1. Three in class Poetry handouts. 

2. The Poetry Assignment.

Here’s The Poetry Assignment:

1. Find three poems that are chock full of poetic devices. Don’t just pick poems you like; pick poems that match the criteria.

2. Print out the poem so I can read it as I mark your analysis. 

3. For each Poetry Analysis do the following:

• Find the background of the poet and write a brief (10 – 15 sentence) paragraph indicating the context of the poem. When was it written? Are there particular biographical references in the poem? Are there allusions in the poem to historical events, people the poet knew?
• List all of the poetic devices in the poem and find every single example of each poetic device. (ie. If there are six examples of alliteration, find all six.)
• Indicate the type of poem it is. (ballad, sonnet, ode, lyric, etc.)
• Indicate the rhyme scheme of the poem
• Write an analysis of the poem in two paragraphs. Paragraph one should focus on style and use of language. Paragraph two should focus on the meaning of the poem.
